The banking sector of Togo was regulated by the Community law of the West Africa Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). The banking environment of Togo is based on a difficult economic context, as is the Community environment.
Togo was not particularly touched by the recent global financial crisis due to the fact that its banking system was not really incorporated into the international financial system until recently. This means that, in 2008, when the world was experiencing the financial crisis, Togo was already in the process of reforming its banking system.
